No John, unfortunately it is not a joke. There were two very subtle
changes to go from a -12 carburetor to a -32 which my plane requires. I
was able to track it down because the 3 of the -32 was over stamped. It
turns out that the mixture control valve is orientated 5 degrees leaner
in the -12 and that it does not have a restriction in the economizer
jet. Lack of that restriction causes the carb to run leaner at partial
throttle settings. So the engine had two strikes against it.
Fortunately, I was able to locate a brand new -32 for less than the cost
of an overhaul.
The good thing about all this is that I have finally located a definite
cause and a positive fix for a problem that I only had a nagging
suspicion before. Unfortunately, I was a costly process.
